Downtown Davidson shops raise $400 and collect needed items during benefit for the Center of Hope Women’s Shelter
Local shoppers have helped two downtown Davidson, NC stores to collect $400, as well as many needed items, to benefit homeless women and children in our area.
The Village Store and Sanctuary Gallery, both on Davidson’s historic Main Street, held a holiday benefit -- “Shelter our Sisters” -- on Sunday, November 22 to raise money for the Salvation Army’s Center of Hope shelter near downtown Charlotte. Donations came in several forms: 10% of the stores’ proceeds for the day were set aside for the shelter, and benefit raffle tickets were given in exchange for either $5 or a donation of needed items.
“Many of our guests brought in large bags of items for the shelter”, said Kristen Feighery of Sanctuary Gallery. “We had stacks of diapers and boxes of towels and deodorant. People were very generous.”
Megan Blackwell of The Village Store was also excited about the response. “Our goal was to raise both money for, and awareness of, the Center of Hope. The Salvation Army’s shelter provides food, shelter, clothes, medical care and training to homeless women and children. While the facility has 204 beds, it frequently houses as many as 300 people – making it the largest women and children’s homeless shelter in the southeast. They really need our help; we’re hoping to do this again next year and include even more stores.”

ART GALLERY GRAND OPENING IN DAVIDSON

DAVIDSON, NC      September 25, 2009    Sanctuary of Davidson is hosting its grand opening on October 8 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at its new home: 108 S. Main Street in historic, downtown Davidson. The gallery, owned by Davidson resident Kristen Feighery, features fine art and handmade crafts from local artists.

“We believe in supporting our community artisans and also feel that everyone should be able to afford an original piece of art. We also enjoy giving back to the wonderful community that so graciously supports us,” stated owner Kristen Feighery.

The grand opening will include a silent auction as a benefit for Davidson-Cornelius Day Care Center. Sanctuary of Davidson artists have donated several pieces of original art for the auction. The auction also includes three pieces created by the children from the day care center. Community Arts Project of Cornelius is working with the children to create an original piece of artwork from each class. The evening will also offer live music by Reeve Coobs and Matt Glass. Cupcakes will be provided by MJ's Sugar Shack.

“I chose Davidson as the location for the gallery because of how supportive and community oriented the town is, which is evident by how people are rallying around the Davidson-Cornelius Day Care. True community supports its families and children or it ceases to survive,” said Feighery.

Sanctuary of Davidson gallery hours are Monday through Friday 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
